About Us

Nigel first started showing dogs in the 1960s. A GSD that was given to him by his uncle who owned, bred, showed and handled GSDs at that time. Nigel was “hooked” and under the Riversley affix he continued to breed and show GSD until the mid 1970s. The introduction around that time of the “Germanic” GSD and the immense change the breed was going through saw Nigel’s love affair with the breed come to an end. In 1974 Nigel & Anne married and just 12 months later a new addition to the family arrived – an English Setter bitch puppy. This bitch became the foundation of the Sarabande kennel. The English Setters were quickly joined by Pointers and both breeds were bred and shown with some success.

In 1977, a small bundle of white fluff joined the household. In 1980 she went on to become the first UK CH Bichon Frise – Ch Glenfolly Silver Lady of Sarabande. Kizi, as we called her had a long and very successful show career and lived to the grand age of 14. Over the years she was joined by a Lhasa Apso and a number of Maltese, all of whom won well at both open and championship show level.

1n 1986, our daughter Kathryn was born and soon after our first welsh springer spaniel joined the family. His name was Canisbay Casanova of Sarabande. He had an illustrious puppy career winning Our Dogs top puppy in breed competition and junior dog at Crufts. He wasn’t shown extensively after that and it wasn’t until 2003 that Shandwick Jack Frost at Sarabande JW joined our small kennel. Jack too was the breed’s top puppy and went on to win a CC under the great Terry Thorn. Sadly we lost Jack early in 2012.

Harvey, Sh Ch Shandwick Kristoffer at Sarabande SHCM arrived early 2005 and had a fabulous show career accumulating multiple CCs and Res CCs and was TOP WSS Dog in 2008. He continues to be shown in veteran classes which he thoroughly enjoys.

Early 2010, Rose joined the family – Sh Ch Shandwick Premier Rose at Sarabande JW and did even better than her kennel mates by becoming a champion at 21months – one of the youngest bitch champions in the breed.

Both Nigel and Anne judge and award CCs. Nigel concentrating on the Gundog group and Anne on the Toy group. Nigel currently awards CCs in English Setters, Welsh Springer Spaniels and Irish Water Spaniels and is on a number of breed A3 and B lists. Anne awards CCs in Bichon Frise and is due to judge the breed at Crufts in 2013.

All our dogs live in our home as part of the family and it is our intention to keep, show and breed healthy, happy and top quality Welsh Springer Spaniels.
